As written in chronicles and another historic records Kowary has been a sports town since a very long time ago. Already in half of XIX ct winter games were being cultivated. A sports life started to flourish especially after the II world war and sportsmen brought up and trained in Kowary reaped the greatest laurels on Polish as well as on international arena. Nowadays in Kowary many sports branches are being cultivated still both in united groups and individually; for that the town is widely known.

Propagating sports is the goal of MZKS "Olimpia" club having its premises in Kowary by Karkonoska street 14. The activity of the club which unites about 400 people is divided into sections of:
 

• football
• karate
• basketball 
• paragliders 
• line-fishing 
• table tennis 
• volleyball
   

Since 1997 the horse riding sports or, to be accurate, recreation have been developing. The forerunner of this discipline in Kowary is Bogdan Parkitny. His children, Aleksandra and Rafał have followed in his footsteps. These days they conduct classes of teaching of horse riding in a riding education centre. In this centre the beginners can take horse riding lessons while more advanced can take rides round a beautiful neighbourhood. 
The activity of numerous sports clubs guarantees the development of physical education in Kowary.
Kowary is also an important centre of air-gliding sports. Weather conditions suitable for this kind of activity exist on the mountains Rudnik, Czoło and Wołowa Góra.
